To increase the number of homegrown players, Liverpool is allegedly 'interested' in signing Hannover goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler at the end of the current campaign. Jorg Schmadtke, the sporting director, who is currently in advanced talks to relocate to Anfield, signed the 34-year-old.
Following a lackluster season in which his team struggled to make a dent in the title race, Jurgen Klopp is hoping to significantly change up his ranks during the summer. Over the previous few weeks, the Merseyside team has been able to improve their chances of making the Champions League, but more work is still needed.
At the end of the season, several fringe talents will depart the Reds, with the majority of those players being 'homegrown'. Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and James Milner, who are both expected to move to Brighton, as well as Nat Phillips and Caoimhin Kelleher, whose contracts expire at the end of the current season, are all free agents.
Klopp will likely be looking for a backup goalkeeper as Kelleher has been strongly linked with a move away from Anfield after allegedly telling the club he no longer wants to be second fiddle to Alisson. By signing Zieler, the former Borussia Dortmund player might be on the verge of resolving both of his pressing problems, according to Bild.
The former Manchester United goalkeeper's contract with Hannover expires in just one year, and there are rising rumors that Liverpool may try to court him. The financial package that Zieler might be offered will be too much for the Bundesliga 2 team to match, but a transfer fee could surely lessen the blow.
Zieler has been one of Schmadtke's most important clients since becoming a sporting director, and he may be the deciding factor in talks with the former Leicester City goalie.
Given that Zieler is a homegrown player, Liverpool may believe that having a seasoned figure in charge is what they need to check off boxes and advance.
With the Premier League allowing clubs to select a 25-man squad if eight of those players qualify, Klopp might also attempt to sign further homegrown players this summer.
The Reds had to select a 23-man squad this season because they only had seven homegrown talents, but Curtis Jones will be eligible for the club next year and will join Joe Gomez, Trent Alexander-Arnold, and Jordan Henderson as key English players. From the upcoming season, Sepp van den Berg, Rhys Williams, Leighton Clarkson, and Vitezslav Jaros will also be considered homegrown players, however,, likely, they will either be sold or sent out on loan for the season.
